Insurance, who is it really for?

It would be nice to think that the bigger people are always looking out for smaller ones, but this is usually not the case. In the United States it is almost mandatory that we have some form of insurance. Why is it that we have to have insurance? We have to have insurance to cover the five hundred dollar bill they send us to visit the doctor just to get a referral for a specialist, we have to have insurance to cover the nine hundred dollars it cost to remove an ingrown toenail, and we have to have insurance because for certain activities it's a law.

We can understand why we have to have insurance, but still the question is present who is insurance really for. Insurance is a business. People sell it. Anything that is a business is meant to make money. In this country, did it some how work out that insurance companies made sure that they were needed and created a demand. Did they changed the economy of our nation to require insurance, and for what, only to make money. Insurance can come in handy, but couldn't the problem with having to have insurance also be solved with. I would say that there's a good chance it could.
