Deceiving Voices

Whenever I hear a talk show host, a singer, or the voice of someone I don't know, I create an image for them. I imagine what type of hair they have, what kind of body shape they inhabit, and what their face looks like, and all this from their voice. Sometimes the person I imagined is in fact very similar to the actual person behind the voice, while others are a complete shock to me.

If you have ever heard Coheed and Cambria, you'll know what I'm talking about when I say I would have never imagined the person signing is the person in the picture. I think we create the person that we want to see, and sometimes we're right and other times we're not. We make people out to be what we want them to. It's a fact of life. We transpose values, ideas, and actions of what we want on them, and then when we find out they're different, it's almost a shock to us. Funny how we do that huh? Anyways, here are a couple of more people where I imagined someone totally different than what they actually looked like. (Most of these I heard from my parents listening to the radio .)

99 billion burgers, and . . . . . what?

So you've sold 99 billion burgers, congratulations, and here's a slap on the back. It's nice to know that we base success on numbers. The bigger the better, right? If you've sold more it means that you're better than everyone else, or you have a lot of spare time counting sold burgers. I wonder if anyone ever thinks what 99 billion burgers mean. Lets break it down.

99 billion burgers means:
  • 34 billion animals had to be killed to make those burgers.
  • 17 billion people had a nice case of food poisoning.
  • 6 billion people are now over weight.
  • 12 billion toys just got thrown away out of a kids meal.
  • 42 billion amounts of wasted food were thrown away.
But honestly, how can these burger figures be correct or even amount to something important. After all, we all must have eaten a lot of burgers if theres only 6 billion people in the world.

Everyone's trying to be someone else

Isn't it funny that everyone tries to be like someone else in one way or another. Why do individuals with white skin tan, and people with darker skin try and get as little sun as possible? Why do people with curly hair straighten their hair, and people with straight hair perm their's? It's almost ironic that everyone is trying to be like something else in one way or another. Even I, am guilty of the same charges. Maybe the reason why is because we see change as progress, but when it really comes down to it who knows. We act, respond, and that's life.

Man - not as smart as he thinks he is

The more we learn, the more we come to find out that what we thought we knew, is in fact, what only what we believe. All of the laws, scientific explanations, and facts about the universe, which are so certain, continually change. A scientific law is only a definition to help our minds understand an abstract concept in logical terms. What we understand today will not be what is understood in fifty years. Yes, many of the same concepts will be the same, but new information will enlighten, change, and reconstruct the laws of today into something new. We need meaning in life, and so we give it meaning through words, definitions, and examples.
